Open Education Resources (OERs), Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), and other Free Online Tutorials

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are openly licensed educational materials available to anyone online for free. What they are exactly can vary from individuals lectures and assignments to full courses. 

  • OER Commons: a free teaching and learning network created by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME), an independent non-profit educational organization based in Half Moon Bay, California.
  • MERLOT II (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching): a curated collection of free and open online teaching, learning, and faculty development services contributed and used by an international education community. (website description)

Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) are open access classes (as opposed to short tutorials) offered online. Depending on who is offering them some are free, others charge tuition fees. Generally they're not acceptable for college credits. But they can be used by those who want to learn about certain subjects regardless of formal academic credit and those students who feel that they need the extra studying.

  • .Saylor Academy: MOOCs offered by the Saylor Foundation, a 01(c)(3) non-profit organization. All Saylor MOOCs are free.
