The Newbery Medal is awarded each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. The award is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Each year the Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Just like Newbery books, Caldecott books can be all sorts of genres, fiction or not, realistic or completely abstract, and even in the form of chapter books too.
