The Newbery Medal is awarded each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. The award is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Newbery Medal winner and Honor Book (runners-up) can be fictional or informative, cover various genres, and should be at the top of your "To Read" list! The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of Randolph Caldecott, a nineteenth-century English illustrator. The medal is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. Each year the Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Just like Newbery books, Caldecott books can be all sorts of genres, fiction or not, realistic or completely abstract, and even in the form of chapter books too.
