Setting up your MLA paper

You can use this MLA Word template to just begin typing your paper. It already has the formatting set up and all it needs is your words.

In-text

In-text Citation Basics:

  • List the Author or Authors' last name(s)
  • List the page number of the content you are using for quotations or paraphrases
  • Page numbers always go in (parentheses)

Example: "Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it yet" (Montgomery 168). OR As L.M. Montgomery once wrote, "tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it yet" (168).

Other in-text rules, see this document:

Works Cited

Your Works Cited is a list of all the sources referenced within the document.

MLA Works Cited List must:

  • Begin on a new page at the end of the student's writing.
  • Have entries listed alphabetically by name of first author (or title if the author is unknown). If there are multiple works by the same author these are ordered by date, if the works are in the same year they are ordered alphabetically by the title.
  • Be double-spaced.
  • Use a "Hanging Indent" for entries that are longer than one line of text.
  • Contain full references on the Works Cited for all citations.
